Animoca data: US Android 4 share and the top 5 Android phones (November 2012)

Top OS versions on the Animoca Android network (US only)

(for the 30 days ending November 29, 2012)

A couple months ago the Android world was disappointed to hear reports that older versions of Google’s mobile OS still accounted for the majority of all Android OS devices. After having a look at our data, we suspect the situation – at least in the US – has improved enormously.

We just performed an analysis of Animoca’s network of US users and found that 46.1% of Animoca Android users in the US use Android version 4.0 or better (versus 51.7% in South Korea, arguably the world’s most technologically advanced market).

This is a huge increase if you consider data reported by Google in September, which showed all versions of Android 4 holding a paltry 22.1% penetration rate among Android devices. At the time, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) ruled the Android ecosystem with a dominating 57.7% share.

Today we see Android 4.0.4 in the lead with 31.4% share of all Android smartphones and tablets, making it the single most popular version of Android on our network. It is followed by Android 2.3.6 which tenaciously hangs on to a 21.5% share, although it will no doubt continue to shrink as newer versions of Google’s mobile operating system supersede it on ever more devices.
